Until Apple does something to make this easier, I guess they’ll just have to continue to condition Mac lovers why this idiocy actually makes sense (some think so). The top menu bar has been a staple of OS X for awhile now and it is hard to change. #2 might be harder to implement because it could involve the cooperation of the developers of all applications for OS X.

That top menu bar is used for every application. Sure, you can easily choose which of your screens is primary (and hence which displays the menu and the Dock), but it does not move. And that is due to the simple fact that the top menu bar is tied to one screen. Visually, the interface for managing multiple monitors in OS X is solid. You can give each screen it’s own background (harder to do that in Windows). Changing arrangement and settings of multiple screens is really easy with OS X. It doesn’t always detect the proper native resolution for the monitor, but that is an easy thing to correct.

Driver installation is a non-issue because Apple so tightly controls the hardware. So, no matter where the application is, the menu bar is within a short distance of your workspace. When you operate an application on a particular screen, the menu bar goes with the program. You can move them around in relation to one another, etc.

You install the video cards, install the drivers, and then all the screens will appear in your Display Properties. Let’s look at REAL WORLD use of multiple screens in both operating systems. But, how does this translate into real-world use? That’s where I fail to see the point of it in the design of OS X. This means that any flick of the mouse upward will hit the menu. So, the idea with the top menu bar in OS X is that it covers the entire top of the screen. More simply stated, the idea is that the larger the target, the easier it is to use.

We’ve reached out to Microsoft to comment on the unreleased Windows XP theme, and we’ll update you accordingly.Fitts’s law (often cited as Fitts’ law) is a model of human movement which predicts the time required to rapidly move to a target area, as a function of the distance to the target and the size of the target. The leak is a rare insight into the early development of an operating system used by millions. Apple has also borrowed some Windows features, particularly around windowing, navigation, control panels, and browsing files and folders. Later in the ‘00s, Apple poked fun at Microsoft with banners at its annual developers conference stating “Redmond, start your photocopiers.” Apple also ran a Get a Mac ad campaign focused on the flaws of Windows, and in particular Windows Vista.ĭuring the ‘90s and ‘00s, Windows was heavily influenced by the classic Mac OS and what later became OS X. Microsoft was developing Windows XP during an era when there was fierce competition with Apple over desktop operating systems. The theme engine in Windows XP was a major update to the OS, allowing for third-party themes and lots of customizability. Microsoft famously moved to a blue and green Luna theme for the final version of XP, which many dubbed Fisher Price-esque when the OS was originally released in 2001.

The theme itself is described as a “Whistler skin with eye candy,” and marked as “for internal use only.” Whistler was the codename for Windows XP. Windows developers appear to have used the theme as a placeholder to build the theme engine for Windows XP.

Microsoft never released its Aqua theme for Windows XP, and we understand it was used in early source code for the OS. Although the theme is incomplete, the Windows XP Start button and various buttons and UI elements are clearly themed to match Apple’s Aqua. One is labeled “Candy” and includes a design that closely resembles Apple’s Aqua interface that was first introduced at the Macworld Conference & Expo in 2000. A recent Windows XP source code leak has revealed Microsoft’s early work on the operating system and some unreleased themes the company created during its early XP development back in 2000. Microsoft created a secret Windows XP theme that made the operating system look more like a Mac.
